Windows7: "This copy is not genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • For over two years I have had no problems with a Dell Vostro 430 with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed. Suddenly, when starting up after a Windows Update on Wednesday night, I get "This copy of Windows7 is not genuine". A Dell software engineer spent four hours in control of my machine (at a price, from India) and couldn't fix it. Re-keying the product key doesn't help. I've run CHKDSK under Administrator ("the system is clean"); SFC /SCANNOW produced a 4.4MB log file and the message that not all of the problems could be fixed.

    Here is the MDiag file:

    Windows 7 Pro.

OK - does the Key on the COA sticker agree with the one in the report?

(Ignore Carey's advice to update the BIOS at this stage - it will NOT affect the genuine-ness situation.)
Please try recreating the Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • SUCCESS! Recreation of the Licensing Store according to your instructions has done the trick!

On typing slui.exe (step 9) there was no response from the CMD screen, but the message "This copy...is not genuine" immediately disappeared. I exited from CMD and restarted the machine and (having waited 20 minutes to make sure) all seems well.

    I'm very grateful to you.

For your interest and documentation, here is a re-run of the MDiag done after the CMD process but before the restart. If you want another one now, let me know.

  • The system has reverted to a Grace period - it is not yet activated. Please reboot.

You may need to activate by phone.

    telephone activation (operator calls)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit
    the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you
require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator
to respond, who can deal with you

  • That looks OK now - there's a minor error remaining, which you can clear by validating Windows at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

Apart from that, you're good to go.
