Updating CRM 2011 Rollup 6 and 7 on CRM Outlook Client and server the same time? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're going to update the CRM 2011 environment with rollup 6 and rollup 7. My question is if the Outlook CRM Client must be upgraded at the same time, or if it can be upgraded before or later?

Anyone who has some experiences on this area?

    Thanks!

  • Charlotte,

    The Latest update

CRM-OUTLOOK Client is, dated on 20th Jan 2012. here

    UR6 dated 20 jan 2012 here

    UR7 dated 23 Mar 2012 here

It is always advice to keep both the Outlook Client and CRM Server Up to date to Avoid unnecessary Issue like Buttons Missing in Ribbon, Configuration or Synchronization error. etc.,

  • Yes, thanks for your answer. I understand that its advisable but is it required from Microsoft?

It's 10 000 users and we need to know if CRM for Outlook is unusable until all of the users has updated the client - or if they can use the client a few days with less version thats on the server?

  • Of course, They can use the Client with lesser Version.

But If the Users are having any trouble with their outlook client after installing the UR, but running fine not on the Web, then you know what to do. :)

  • I believe it is not required to have them in sync by Microsoft.  The Implementation Guide makes the following statement:

In what order should I apply an Update Rollup?

    <content xmlns="http://ddue.schemas.microsoft.com/authoring/2003/5">

For server roles and server role groups, you must apply the same Update Rollup to them before you bring them back online. Similarly, if you have Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2011 installed on multiple computers, such as in a Network Load Balancing (NLB) configuration, you must update all the nodes in the NLB cluster before you bring them back online. A mixed deployment of Microsoft Dynamics CRM servers or server roles that are running different Update Rollup versions is not supported.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients typically function correctly when you connect to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM server that has the following Update Rollup deployment configurations:

    • Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients that are running an earlier Update Rollup than the server, which is running the next Update Rollup. For example, your client is running Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook, and it is connected to a server that is running Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2011.
    • Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook clients that are running a later Update Rollup than the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server, which is running the earlier Update Rollup. For example, your client is running Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook, and it is connected to a server that is running Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2011.

For optimal user experience, we recommend that you apply Update Rollups to your clients soon after you update to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2011.
