Developer Notes for Fields in Dynamics CRM 2013 ???? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In CRM 2011, while creating or editing a field, we specified the Description of the field much like developer notes. However, in CRM 2013 those descriptions are now displayed as a tool-tip, when users hover over a field label on a form they see the developer notes which is not meaningful to them.

Because the Description on fields is only ever displayed when viewing the field from the customization side of things, but never to the end users. Looks to  me is the best place to put developer notes, also in our work environment we have so many contractors come and go and lack of documentation, it is important to us to know the significance of creation of those fields.

I just wanted to know how other people are managing the developer notes on the field level from CRM Side. Also, if i have to change the description fields to blank, i have to open those fields one by one and then remove notes and save, is there any tool that can help me to remove those existing descriptions. Metadata Browser kind of tool is great to download things in excel but it would be great if someone can point me to a tool where i can upload also.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks.

  • We use design documents, TFS, and central configuration management. If a new field is requested by a developer, they must include development notes in the design document, or the configuration manager won't add the field. While that means using an external source for those notes, at least they're all in one place.

  • Puneet,

Here is a tool that can save you from editing each attribute. http://www.crminnovation.com/crm-solutions/tooltipmanager.htm

Have also relied on the design documents for field related info... documentation helps!
