CRM 2011 - Trying to use an IFrame to have a document or link to a document from a Network folder to appear on my Dashboard RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to create either a link to a Document or have the document show in my dashboard. The document is located in a Network folder. I am trying to create the URL needed to make the connection by using an IFrame. I am NOT an IT guy, but I am not completely useless with a PC either. I do not have Admin privileges so I don't want to use a Web Resource as that would involve getting an IT guy involved at work - which take months to happen in a big corporation like the one I work in... I think I can do this myself so I wnt to learn how to. It will really help me with adding training material into our CRM system for newbies ....

The Iframe seems to want either an http, https, ftp or ftps starting designation. I think I have tried every single combo, tried reversing the slashes, etc...but can't seem to make it happen. Any suggestions or links to directions on how to do this? Sorry if my terminology is lacking....:-(

  • IFrames can only show content that's accessible via one of the web protocols (http, https, ftp or ftps ). Network folders are accessed via a different protocol, so cannot be displayed directly in an IFrame.

    A couple of options are:

    1. If you have an IIS Server available, within a web site you can create a virtual directory that maps to the network folder, and the virtual directory will be available via http/https (or maybe ftp)
    2. Could you store the document(s) in an alternate store that is accessible via a web protocol - e.g. OneDrive or SharePoint ?
