  • Unfortunately, you have an invalid license for a Volume License version of Windows XP Professional.  Volume licenses are used mainly in business enterprises.  Since Windows XP is no longer sold by Microsoft, consider installing a "Full Version" edition of Windows 7 which is available from the Microsoft Store.

  • Hello Shrinath,

Look on the computer's case (if a desktop) or the bottom or inside the battery compartment (if a laptop) for a 1" x 3" label called a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).  This label should have a description of the version and edition of Windows that the computer is licensed to run, as well as the computer manufacturer's name (in your case either Lenovo or maybe IBM, and the product key.

Please reply and tell us the version and edition of Windows and the manufactuer name that's on the CoA.  But!!!!!  Do NOT post the product key.

If the version and edition of Windows on the CoA says Windows XP Professsional, you are in luck----the product key updater utility may be able to "genuine-ize" your installation of XP.  Go here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/genuine/product-key and choose the Windows XP tab to begin.

If the CoA is not for XP Pro, let us know what it says for more advice.

  • Hi Carey,

I know that Microsoft has stopped selling Windows XP, but the thing is we were working on the same copy since last 4 years and it was working fine also. Due to some problem we re-installed O.S in last week since that time i am facing this "Windows Validation" issue. My Win XP is already activated but the thing is it's not passing Windows Validation.

  • Hi,

My computer is not a Branded System, actually it is Assemled PC. And the Win XP Proffessional SP2 (OEM) CD i got as a free gift from our vendor. It was working fine from last 4 years, this time only i am facing this problem. Windows has been activated already but while updating it fails to pass Windows Validation.

I tried "Product key updater tool" as you said, while running that i am getting message like "The product key you entered matches product key currently in use. Please try again."

Please suggest me any solution for the same.

Vendors are not allowed to distribute Volume License editions – he effectively gave you a counterfeit install.

  • Hello Shrinath,

Does this computer have a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA), as previously asked?

  • It's likely Microsoft recently discovered that the Windows XP Volume License you have was stolen or misused and is now classified as invalid.  Besides, Volume Licenses cannot be transferred or given away to individuals.  You would need a conventional "retail" Windows XP license or move up to Windows 7.

  • As i said before, this is not branded desktop to have (CoA). Actually this is assembled desktop, and we got OEM DC with Microsoft Hologram, and while receiving this kit it was fully packed.

The Key in use here CANNOT be sold.
Please check that the Key in use is the same as the one that came with your package – if it is, then it is a counterfeit package.

  • Yes, it can be possible. But since 2006-07 till date we were using same CD and same Key, and it was working fine. This time only we are facing this issue. As i said before Win XP getting activated but failed to validate. Do we have any other options to solve this issue or i need to remove "Windows Validation Tool" while windows update? Because i don't think it's worth to purchase new package while having genuine package with us, even our management doesn't allow us to purchase the same.

  • The current install is COUNTERFEIT - IT IS ILLEGAL.

You or your company MUST address this issue in one way or another - either by reinstalling with a valid Key, or by junking the machine and replacing it.

    (sorry about the typo!)
You can report the counterfeit  to MS using the following page, and the links off it.

Your problem was identified, and you were informed of how to correct it.
The fact that you seem to be unwilling to follow the advice you have been given is immaterial.

Should you choose to follow that advice, your system will no longer be marked as potentially counterfeit (which it most definitely is, currently).

You got everything you asked for and required – except a way to make a counterfeit look genuine.

Perhaps software which hid the Key from the MS servers failed, or you’ve not had to install the WGA Notifications  update previously.
None of that would change anything – the Key is NOT, and NEVER WAS a valid one.
