Cannot upgrade to Vista SP1/access windows upgrades/validation issues following hardware failure & resetting laptop to factory settings RRS feed

  • Question

  • My son has recently returned from university for xmas break with issues with his Lenovo laptop which I bought as present in Dec 2007. The pc rescue & recovery program suggests that the hard drive has failed its scan tests, however continues to work albeit with errors. Followed windows suggestion to upgrade, however was unable to access "windows update" from start menu & SP1 download from "windows download" site failed to install. Tried microsoft fix it & ended up trying to validate the Vista software hoping that would lead me to a solution. I have considered a new hard drive but the hardware, software, os & driver issues frightens the life out of me. Can someone advise how to escape this nightmare.

This is a ticking time bomb.  Backup and offload your data while you can.

Your issue is a hardware issue that is causing the software problems.  Installing a new hard disk is beyond the scope of this forum.  If the laptop is not under warranty anymore, take the computer to a reputable repair facility for repair, or ask a computer-savvy friend to help you.

    Good Luck!
