Redeploy from CRM 3.0 to CRM 4.0 in the same domain

Question

Hello,
We’re in the process of planning an upgrade of our MS CRM 3.0 installation to CRM 4.0. Our CRM 3.0 install is on a low spec server so we have bought a new higher spec server to run our CRM 4.0 installation. We therefore need to transition from CRM 3.0 on the old server (W2K3) to CRM 4.0 on the new server (which is running server 2008!), both servers are running SQL 2005 SP2 and are in the same AD domain. Our Exchange setup consists of one 2003 server and one 2007 server. The CRM email router is running on the 2003 box as CRM 3.0 email router won’t run on Exchange 2007. We are retiring our Exchange 2003 box and putting the email router on the 2K7 box. I’ve never redeployed CRM within the same domain before and could do with some advice on the quickest and easiest way to get our org up and running CRM 4.0 with the email router on 2K7.
Many Thanks.

To get from CRM 3.0 to CRM 4.0 you need to run an upgrade on one of the machines. The main steps I'd take are:
-
Copy the MSCRM and METABASE databases to the new server - I normally use SQL backup / restore, or you could detach the data files, copy them, then reattach
-
Install CRM 3.0 on the new server, and select the Connect to Existing Databases option
-
Run the upgrade to CRM 4.0 on the new server
-
Remove the new Email router and install the old Email router
An alternative would be to upgrade CRM on the old box, but you can end up in a messy position if it fails, whereas the above route allows you to test the upgrade process

Dear Jeff,
1. first you have to upgrade to CRM 4.
2. You can use virtual PC for CRM 4, in this way crm 3 will also work
see MS CRM Implementation guide for this.

Thanks David, That looks like the best option for us. I will give it a whirl. apologies for the delay in replying to the posts - I went away for a long weekend expecting to have internet access but there wasn't even a phone line where I was staying! I'm going to start this off today and will post if I have any problems.
Thanks also to Imran for your post.
Thank you
Jeff
