Vista OEM PCs and MAK Proxy Activation RRS feed

  • Question

  • After reading your Oct 06 white paper on Software Protection for Windows Vista, I have a question..

Will the upcoming MAK Proxy Activation service deny any requests from a PC with a re-imaged OEM version of Vista?  If it does accept the request, will it not decrement the number of Volume activations?

The question comes from the situation where an individual PC is re-imaged (i.e. 'recovered') with it's original OEM edition of Vista (using the recovery DVD's supplied by the OEM) .  When this happens, one assumes that OS-Product Activation is required by the end-user or IT Staff (with the original product activation completed by the OEM) .   If that PC is connected to a MAK Proxy Activation service before the IT staff activate the OEM edition of Vista, will MAK identify it as an OEM-based Vista, and thus NOT decrement the number of volume activations?

    Thx in advance
