How can I tell what email address was used for my WHS domain name? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had to reinstall my WHS and (since I use a large number of email addresses, to keep business and personal lives separated and compartmentalize functions) I can't remember what email address I used to register my original domain name (castle-anthrax.homeserver.com in case anyone cares). How can I find out which email address was used to register it?

There is no way to find out (other than it has to be a Live ID so, for example, it wouldn't be a Yahoo or Google email; chances are it's either xxxxx@hotmail.com or xxxxx@msn.com).  You'll have to try all of your Live IDs (or just keep trying to set it up periodically as it will be released sooner or later).

  • Other persons create new IDs just for this purpose, and this if often a live.com (or live.de or such depending from location) or a passport.com domain.

  • There is no way to find out
I suspect that, if the domain were being used for illicit purposes (running a torrent-tracker dealing in copyrighted files, for example; say, Microsoft software packages), someone at Microsoft could find out rather quickly.

So, if I may, I would correct your answer to "there's no way for the end-user to find out."

Other than that quite minor quibble, thanks! I'll try all of my addresses one after another until one works. Or until the old domain is released and I can re-establish it.

  • I'm not sure I understood but if it is what i am thinking, just go to your WHS console, select setting and go to the remote access section.  Under the link to your domain name there is a [DETAILS] button.  When you press that, it opens another window which shows your account information and in there it should also kist your email address.

Hope this helps but if not, I wish you luck ;)

  • The details page doesn't show the email address used on either my production server or my test server, I'm afraid...
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
