multi core? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I heard somewhere that multiple processors aren't supported in vail.  What about quads or six core cpu's?  Thinking of upgrading from a dual to a six.

  • My Vail servers seem to be using 2 cores under Hyper-V...

Why / what -in what area - do you expecte - much - gain? WHS doesn't need very much speed in my opinion since it's not doing very much in general.

That is just overkill.  A great processor for home server would be a Xeon in the e5503 - 5507 category.  They will run on X58 boards, and they have a low TDP of 80w.  And they are also pretty cheap for xeons.

  • Vail supports a single CPU socket, but allows for multiple cores.

More power can be usefull for transcoding vidéo while you stream over Remote web access ;) And you can use alternate DLNA server wich can transcode (not the case for Media connect) on the fly for you DNLA receiver. If you have a basic (Integrate Motherboard) RAID system with multiple clients that can access simultaneously the shares you may need a little bit of power. Not really need for 6 cores .. but 2 can be the least, some times.

  • To be honest, i've started hosting a minecraft server.  When there have been a lot of players on the cpu usage can get rather high on the dual core.  And I stream to 1-3 pc's/ps3.   So in this case I would need more.  I know that this isn't supported but why host it on a gaming machine that uses tons of power and sleeps at night, when I can just add it to whs.  I'll go from an 80w cpu to a 130 or something but that's alright.  I've though about a quad core, there are some that are 90w or around there but might as well get a six, ya never know.
