RAW Photo Support in Windows 8.1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm running Windows 8.1 natively on an iMac in its own partition, and have no trouble viewing RAW format photos.  But when I try to view the same photos on the Dell XPS 10 I just purchased to use as my test system, the photos don't display.  Not even in the native Windows Photos or File Explorer apps.  Both systems are running Windows 8.1.  Both have the latest updates.

Anyone have any ideas why this is?  Any ideas how to fix this?

  • The MSDN Windows Store apps forums are for developers to discuss writing Windows Store apps to run on Windows 8 and Windows RT.

For help with using Windows 8.1 Preview please post in the Windows 8.1 Preview forum on http://answers.microsoft.com .

My guess is that you have the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack installed on one system but not the other. See http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829

  • Thanks Rob,

I posted here because it is a development issue.  I'm developing on one system and testing on another.  If they don't behave the same, then I have a problem.

The link you provided is for Windows 7 and Vista.  It appears that there is no Microsoft Camera Codec Pack update for Windows RT 8.1 (at least not yet).  I've been unable to find out if there was one for Windows RT 8.0.  The funny thing is that I didn't load a Codec Pack for my iMac's Windows 8.1 installation either, yet it works fine there. I just expected core functionality like software codecs to be platform independent, so I assumed I was doing something wrong setting up my development systems.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.
