In order for the installation to go thru the validation process, it must first be activated.

"Your software cannot be activated because the Product Key used to install the software is not valid"
Seems strange when a green "tick" appears after I type in the key and installation continues.

Hello fatblokekev,
You wrote, "Seems strange when a green "tick" appears after I type in the key and installation continues."
The green tick means that on the surface the product key "fits" the product key checking algorithm programmed into the software. At this point a valid (meaning a product key actually issued by Microsoft) and an invalid (meaning a product key made with a key generator program and never actually issued by Microsoft) would be on equal footing and would both "light up" the green check.
The next step, activation thru the online activation servers, further proofs the installed product key against lists of product keys known to be invalid or compromised and against lists of known-genuine product keys. Apparently it is at this stage where your product key is failing muster--it appears that you may have a counterfeit product. IMO your first course of action should be to return the software to place of purchase for a refund.
Please let us know about the packaging. Did the product come in a clear plastic box with one rounded corner? Is there a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) on the top of the clear plastic box? Does the product description on the box say Office Professional 2007 or Office Professional Plus 2007? What product is described on the CoA? Is there a pivoting disc tray inside? On this tray, is there a yellow-orange Proof of License label? Is the product key on the Proof of License label the exact same product key you entered during Setup? Do the discs look like genuine hologrammed Microsoft discs? Do the discs have Office Profesional 2007 or Office Professional Plus 2007 on the holographic label?

First of it was bought online from a website http://www.softonlineseller.com/ on 20th March this year. I have had no issues with them at all - they perport to be legal re-sellers of microsoft products. It is a download with no manuals, the download being a disk image. When I installed the suite on my old laptop in March this year, it passed authenticity straight away. Now that I have to re-install, it doesnt.
There was a trial version of Office 2007 on this laptop when it finally went through the laborious Windows 7 "Getting ready for first use" hour this afternoon. I deleted this using Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, before I installed my copy. Perhaps there is still a remnant of the original trial version still on the system which I cannot see. Perhaps it is like trying to get Norton of a computer - almost impossible.
Saturday, May 15, 2010 4:03 PM -
Hello fatblokekev,
The likelihood of remnants of a trial installation causing your current difficuties is remote, but here is an MS KB article that has an MS FixIT utiity that fully removes Office 2007 installations. You could run it to ensure that the current installation as well as previous trial installations are completely cleaned off, then do a fresh installation of your Office.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/en-us
However, I do not expect that to cure the ill. The fact that the product key is being rejected by the automated system and the phone system with the same error message right at the activation step would indcate that the problem is the key itself and not any other software that might be on the computer.
Having a look at the site from which you purchased, I am inclined to believe that your purchase was of a download of copied Office Professional Plus 2007 discs combined with the issuance of a KeyGen Invalid product key.
If you search the Office GA forum for this search term "Office Professional Plus 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK" you will see hundreds of posts from people who purchased physical product where the counterfeiters were able to produce very well done counterfeits that also used Invalid Volume Licensing Product Keys. Even though your specific seller sold a link to a product download rather than physical product shipped to you, I believe that your situation is similar in that the seller sold the product with Invalid Volume Licensing Keys.
As a rule, Office Professional Plus 2007 is not sold as a retail product to consumers. Office Profesional PLus 2007 is normally sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and the like under a Volume Licensing program intended for organizations that are fielding hundreds and thousands of computers.
There is a program offered to such organizations that allows the organization's employees to purchase a copy of the Office software used by the organization at a fraction of the regular cost (USD $10-20), but such offer is only extended to employees and the use of the software is contingent upon continued employment with said organization. This program is not offered to the general public or average consumers, and the program is sold thru a Microsoft (or Digital River, a MS partner) website and no others.
I would urge you to pursue whatever refund remedies are available to you thru the site you purchased from, or from your payment system (such as a credit card, PayPal/equivalent, etc), or thru local consumer protection or law enforcement agencies.

This still seems very suspect - it validated fine in March and doesn't now!
Is the copy legal or illegal? If it is illegal - why doesn't the Microsoft emopire do anything about it, and leaves it to up poor individuals who have lost hard earned money to fight the corner?

Hello fatblokekev,
You wrote, "This still seems very suspect - it validated fine in March and doesn't now!"
In your first post you were using "activation" and "validation" interchangeably, but they are different processes. It is entirely possible that your installation activated in March, and you may never had occasion to actually validate the product installation. There is no Microsoft requirement to validate an installation of Office. Microsoft offers a Windows Update KB949810 that is the Office Genuine Advantage Notifications utility, but that update is a voluntary update that could easily be refused by a user.
Microsoft does exert extensive effort to fight software counterfeiting and piracy. Microsoft offers free replacements to people who inadvertently purchase well done counterfeits of its physical Windows and Office products, and has offered substantial discounts to people who have nongenuine software installed but have no physical media. Law enforcement efforts have helped http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/jul07/07-24CounterfeitingSyndicatePR.mspx, but for the foreseeable future it will remain a game of "whack-a-mole."
Buyers have to do their part too----Microsoft's best ally in the fight against piracy is an educated and cautious consumer who realizes that an online offer from a no-name website of £75.28 for a product that would retail (if it were sold at retail, which it is not) for £449.49 is "too good to be true." http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/en-GB/Microsoft/Office-Professional-2007
If you feel that there is a chance of error, please feel free to submit a request for free email tech support. In the email exchange, you can submit your full product key to the support staff so that they can check and confirm its nongenuine status. http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprif=11482

Oh the wonders of Microsoft!
There was a problem with the product ID. Please re-enter the product ID in the correct format as shown. You may also obtain support by paying with a credit card.To determine if no-charge support is available, provide the product identification number.<input id="container_PID_rbtnAutoPid" class="wfxRadioButton" onclick="function onclick() { SetOptionCollectionIdInHash("AutoManualPid", "1"); }" name="container$PID$AutoManualPid" type="radio" value="rbtnAutoPid" /><label class="wfxRadioLabel" for="container_PID_rbtnAutoPid">Let Microsoft locate the product identification number

Their own "finding " system cant even do it - I am damned if I am going to give my credit card to pay even more money
So- -what is next?

Hello fatblokekev,
Is there no product ID? (A product ID is not a product key.)
Start Word, then click the Office button, then Word Options, then Resources, then About to see the product ID. It'll be in this format:

Hello fatblokekev,
Part of the product ID is derived from the product key, so maybe the product key being nongenuine is generating a PID that is out of whack as well.
Are you stuck needing a product ID to go forward in your support request?

I have just had 38 minutes on the phone from a very nice and extremely able Microsoft Employee in Idia, Mohan, who has rectified my problem.
I take back all the negative comments I have said about Mocrosoft and my worries that this situation would not be rectified. It has, and I am extremely happy.
Many thanks to you all

Hi Dan
Contrary to what LVTravel stated above - my copy was legal!. As I stated earlier on, when I bought the new laptop last week, there was a trial copy of Office 2007 on the system. I deleted this and then installed my purchased version. M NowOhan said thet there was probably a conflict between a residue from the original installation, and my copy.
He spent a lot of time finding the issue and then repairing the installation. It now has validated and shows as 100 Genuine. So now, I have my suite of programs back with no box saying it is not validated.
Thank you Dan for your support throughout this process - If you hadn't organised a code for me which allowed me to get Technical Support, I would still have been in the same position, and getting more and more bitter as time went on. People like LVTravel purely being totally negative does not help any situation.
Once again, Thanks to Dan and Mohan for sorting my issues out in a very professional manner.
Kevin

Hello fatblokekev,
There seems to be a discrepancy between the GUID of your installed Office and the Pid Type value.
Product GUID="{90120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}"
PidType>1
The second digit of the GUID denotes the product is supposed to be a Volume License installation, but the Pid Type value of 1 denotes that the product is supposed to be a retail license installation.
I do not have an explanation for this situation because one would think any given installation of Office should be either a Volume Licensed or retail licensed installation, and cannot be both at the same time.
However, from your point of view, as long as the installation Validates and reports as Genuine, you should be fine.
Thanks for taking the time to post the results and the second mgadiag report. :-)

Probably the residue from the original installation - One was probably volume licenced and the other retail licenced. However it is fixed now :)

Hello fatblokekev,
I'm glad to hear your issue is resolved.
To satify my own curiosity, I would like to find out how the support person figured out the issue and what, exactly, he did to resolve it. Would you tell me the Service Request number for that incident so I can look up the support person's notes?
Thank you,

Interesting... Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 is strictly a Volume License product. A retail product key will not activate it. Genuine Volume License products are not sold individually. If they are, it is done illegally and chances are pretty darn good the license will be flagged as "non-genuine" sometime in the future.
