Windows 7 Pro - Unable to activate RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dell E5530, Win7 Pro OEM.

We had to replace the hard drive in my laptop. I was able to capture the Win7 Licence Key from the original HD. I purchased a new HD and installed windows Win7 Pro and used the original license key to activate - Error Code: Invalid Volume License Key. Microsoft support has been no help … they say to call Dell support. Dell support has been no help … they say to call Microsoft. I am posting The MGADiag tool report below. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • The installed Key is the OEM_SLP Key for a Dell Computer shipped with Windows 7 Pro installed.

Your machine appears to be one on which this type of install is only valid as a Downgrade from Windows 8.x Pro - the motherboard's BIOS is dated 2014.

Is there a COA Sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment) for Windows 7 Pro? If not, then you MUST reinstall using Dell's Recovery media, rather than the retail disk you seem to have used.

You can order a set of recovery media from Dell US - providing the machine shipped with Win7 installed.

If there is a Windows 7 Pro COA sticker on the case, then change the installed Key to the one on the sticker...

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

  • Correct - this laptop was originally a downgrade from Win8 to Win7. Unfortunately there is not a COA sticker on the case or the battery compartment. It appears that I will have to round up a copy of Dell’s Recovery media and start over with a fresh install.

    Thank you for your time.
