Luckily, though, 2008 server works as a client with V1... probably because V1 doesn't know what it is.Friday, August 20, 2010 1:53 AM

Thanks for the note kariya21! By V1 do you mean the current version of WHS? We are currently backing up 6 servers, all running windows server 2003, using windows home server without any problems. It just works!Friday, August 20, 2010 12:46 PM

That may be. It's quite convenient if it does work, and in a very small shop I think it's probably not a horrible idea.It is, however, unsupported. And it may not work when you need it most, so make sure you also do traditional backups.

Yes, it is convenient. We are a small shop and needed a better backup system then tapes. So we thought we could use V1 to backup our servers. It has been working without a hitch for a year now on all of them. We have even gone back and restored files as needed. We have never once had a problem with it. We have not tried to restore a system with it though.Friday, August 20, 2010 1:08 PM

Bare metal restore is where you would be most likely to have problems. You need to have a plan B in place, jsut in case.
That said, I know a number of SBS consultants sell an HP MediaSmart Server (or datavault) to every SBS client they take on, for client and (often) server backups. It's the cheapest "per seat" business client backup tool out there, and it works better than most...

Actually this is plan c for us. We have separate drives for the OS and data and then each is in raid 1. The backups are mainly to be able to go back in time and grab a file that may have been deleted or altered. AS for cheap... We build our own boxes out of old machines. We can build a WHS box for a couple hundred dollars.Friday, August 20, 2010 5:16 PM
