Suggestion: Sync two folders on the same computer with one live folder? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I would like to sync two same folders with online live mesh folder. It works like backup but automatically done. So I don't have to back'em up myself.

  • So you have two folders on the same machine you want to sync?  I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish here hehe.

  • Live Mesh isnot intended to be used as a backup to the cloud. At this point you are limited to 5 gigs of cloud storage, though, so it is possible. Simply install Live Mesh on the PC, select the folder or folders that you wish to sync to the Live Desktop and choose Add to Mesh. If you have other PCs in your Mesh, you can then choose to not sync with those PCs by changing the sync properties on the Live Desktop for those folders.

  • what i mean is that for example you have a folder named like "holiday pics" on your desktop and in your photo folder. and you want to sync both these folders to live mesh cloud. but on the cloud there will only be one folder called "holiday pics". once you changed one of them, the others, both local and remote, would be changed by live mesh.

  • thanks for the answer. well actually it's not kind of backup, just looks like. like i explained before. why i need this is that i have a folder of important docs on one hard disk and also a backup on another harddisk on the same computer. i need to sync this folder with co-workers but i don't like to copy the backup folder everyday. if it could work automatically would be perfect. but as you may see from the cloud, it is still the same as when you only have one folder locally.

  • No, this is not an option with Live Mesh.
In order to do this, you'll need to seek another solution.
    I can recommend a free one - SyncToy - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C26EFA36-98E0-4EE9-A7C5-98D0592D8C52&displaylang=en
Version 2.1 of SyncToy was just released and it can do what you want. In order to automate it, though, you will need to create a task in the Windows Task Scheduler. It will not automatically sync data between two folders.

  • So it must be called an "Suggestion". :) I am not actually looking for the solution on Live Mesh to solve the problem cause i've already tried.

Using two sync software on the same source would make more problem then solving it. I've tried to sync my calendar and contacts both with Microsoft Outlook and Exchange server provided by gmail and it turns out to be a mess. have to edit about 100 entries manually to get them back to normal.

anyway, thanks for the tip and i will give SyncToy a go, but maybe some less important folders next time.  Thank you all for your time on these posts.

I would thank you more if this function could be included in the release version of Live Mesh :)

  • You're welcome. It's an interesting scenario - sync the same folder to the Live Desktop and perhaps additional devices in the Mesh, but actually allow the sync to also happen between two local folders on the same PC....

  • Hmm, strange thing, but I am really sure I used this feature in Live Sync in 2008... I can't remember any certain details, but I do remember I had two folders, one I named Exchange, the other was in sync with it some way. Once I put some ~100MB files in the first one, launched Process Manager and was pleasingly surprised that the network band is not occupied, and the data is being transfered within HDD. What was that? Feature left outboard during Mesh and Sync merge? Or it dreamed to me as I fell asleep at my PC yet another time?:))

    I suspect it was a dream. :-)

  • Neither. I remembered. It was a transaction between two folders being synced under two users on same computer. Yes. :)
