Onecare Didnt Backup IE7 Favorites RRS feed

  • Question

  • I reformatted, reinstalled XP and am reloading apps. I saved all my files onto separate USB drive, but didn't place copy of Internet Favorites there - because they are stored in a separate place by Windows. Tried to restore favorites using Onecare backup, but the file is NOT listed in the backups. Do I need to be looking someplace else?

  • One Care backs up Internet Explorer favorites by default so your favorites should be included in your backup files. See this Microsoft Knowledge Base article on restoring files from One Care backups - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944171/en-us

  • I had read the article you sent me to before I posted my question. The simple fact is that OneCare did NOT backup my internet explorer favorites file. I have searched all my backed up files for "favorite" and it is not in the list.

  • I just finished a fresh backup of my newly refreshed machine with OneCare and the Internet Favorites file was again NOT backed up. When I configured the backup, I left all the defaults in place - which included Internet Explorer Favorites.

    Still Confused!

  • The favorites should have been backed up and I'm hoping they are and you just can't find them. I suggest contacting support for help. How to reach support - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1740&SiteID=2

  • Your Favorites are stored in \Documents and Settings\{User Name}\Favorites (XP) or \Users\{User Name}\Favorites (Vista).

When you do a restore, if the refreshed machine has the same User Name for Windows, OneCare can't restore the \Favorites to the same location since the folder already exists. It should have restored the folder and files to an alternate location on the drive - I don't recall the name, but look at the folders at the root of the C:\ drive for something like \Windows Live OneCare Restore\

Alternatively, browse your backup by starting the restore Wizard and sorting the resulting files listing by folder name and scrolling through the list or searching the list for a Favorite that you recall having saved before. Use "wild cards" for the name such as Microsoft* which will return all files beginning with the word "Microsoft."

If you are still unable to locate your Favorites, please contact support as these should have been backed up based on your plan selection.
