  • Question

  • I recently needed to reinstall windows on my computer, but I not having the right knowledge or time to do so, a friend offerd to do it for me. I do not have the orignal system recovery disks and he used his copy of windows to install the needed software. I'm now needing to validate my windows and cannot because the product keys do not match. Can I change the product key of the windows installed with the windows product key listed on the bottom of my computer? I have read other responses from this forum but I still don't know how to fix this problem Please let me know what to do. Thank you for your time.

  • Justin Brooke,

Right now, your Gateway computer has a Volume Licensing (VL) edition of XP Pro installed (Line 10), and that installation was done with an invalid Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are invalidated by Microsoft at the report of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, or misused.  Also, MS may have invalidated the key if it was generated by a non-MS Key Generator program, which seem to be your situation.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

If you search the forum for the part of the Product Key shown in the report, RPD9Q-XPGQM-GWJ78, you will see that Product Key has already been reported by at least one other poster.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

More bad news:  Your Office 2003 Pro installation is showing as Nongenuine (Office status=114 means nongenuine).  If this comes as a surprise to you, please go back to where you purchased the installed copy of Office and let them know that it is a counterfeit copy and that you demand the genuine copy that you paid for, or a refund.  In any case, please uninstall the nongenuine installation of Office 2003 as soon as possible.  Your installed copy of Front Page 2003 is currently showing as Genuine, but it is also a Volume Licensing license, so if the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of this installation are not appropriate to Volume Licensing, don't be surprised if sometime in the future it, too, is identified as Nongenuine.

Look on the computer or in the materials that came with your computer or your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or for another verison of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?  We would expect to see Gateway.

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  Click here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

Luckily, the solution to your XP problem is simple but a little laborious.  If the CoA is for XP Home, Media center, or Tablet use the recovery solution supplied by Gateway to replace the nongenuine installation of XP Pro with the genuine original installation of Windows XP, which was on your computer when you purchased it new, as documented by the Certificate of Authenticity that is affixed to the computer case.  Be sure to back up and offload your data before you do this because typically the recovery process destroys all data on the hard disk.

Typically, the recovery solution will be a set of CDs/DVDs that came with the computer or were to have been made by you using a utility that came with the computer, or a hidden recovery partition that is accessed by special keystrokes at system startup.  The specific solution for your computer would have been outlined in the documentation that came with the computer, and may be available at the Gateway support page for this exact model of Gateway computer on the Gateway web site.

If you do not have the Recovery CD supplied by Gateway, you can order Recovery CDs for many Gateway models directly from Gateway for a reasonable price.  If they cannot help you, try http://www.restoredisks.com or a Google search of sites that sell recovery discs.

If the CoA is for XP Pro, try the Product Key Updater:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx
