Improve media connection with xbox360 ( Windows Media Connect 2.0 can't see MP4 files)

Question
-
I can't play my MP4 H.264 video my xbox360 from my WHS. As WHS only comes with Windows Media Connect 2.0, I need to install either Windows Media Player 11 or the Zune software in order to stream my MP4's. The problem is that both WMP11 and Zune installer refuse to install on WHS as it is Windows Server 2003. The compatibility tab did not help as it only has a WinXP setting and not WinXP Sp2, WMP11 and Zune state they require at least WinXP Sp2.
Any object on this as part of the service pack would be great

A number of people have installed WMP 11 on their WHS. There are instructions in this post:
The method is completely unsupported, but appears to work just fine.

WHS got nicked pretty good in almost every professional review of it due to these lack of newer media streaming capabilities. I for one am very curious to see where MS will be going with this. If they add too much, it will impact MCE sales; but on the other hand, people who want centralized whole house audio and video shouldn't have to have two computers, one running WHS and one running MCE, both up 24/7. That's not very Green.

I think the reason they used WMC 2.0 and not 3.0 or 4.0 is they are not stand alone they are built in as part of windows media player 11 where as WMC 2.0 and below is stand alone software. I hope they are at least working on away to get 4.0 in WHS.Sunday, February 10, 2008 10:17 AM

Yes Windows Media Connect on WHS is totally lame. (I am trying to stream to a mix of Win XP, Vista, PS3 & Zensonic Z500 clients.) I have installed Twonky Media to get something a bit more useful.
'Competition to MCE' begs me to ask; exactly what is the streamer in MCE?? Is it installable on WHS? I hope MS address the streamer in the upcoming power pack.

I just got a WHS and I love it, but one of the things I like about it is its "appliance" nature - things just sort of "work" and I don't have to tinker with it the way I do with many other devices. As such, I'm reluctant to do the hackery required to get WMP11 installed and running on my Home Server, but I'd really like the added functionality supported. Is there some roadmap out there where we can see if something like this is coming in a future version? Or are we left to the mercy of whether or not the WHS folks read the forums?Wednesday, September 10, 2008 4:50 PM

Oh, found the Connect site. Voted for appropriate issues there.Wednesday, September 10, 2008 5:03 PM
