Help! I downgraded my laptop from Vista to  XP. Among many driver issues (most I was able to resolve), I can't seem to solve the sound driver issue. The device is shown as unknown. If PCI device is deleted from hardware list, windows xp will find it on reboot but cannot find a driver. The speakers will play base system sounds ie. loud beep.

(do not know sound card maker or how to find out)

  • Hello northernsnowmonkey,

Laptops generally use specific drivers and the maker of the laptop will usually have all driver, for a specific laptop model, on their web site, have you checked HP's website for the driver?  If the HP site doesn't have XP driver then you should be able to contact HP and find out what sound card it is and then go to the sound card maker's website.

But since the hardware and the driver software are made by other companies, I believe there is very little Microsoft would be able to do to resolve your issue.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
