WHS trial disk install problem? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have downloaded ISO file, burnt a DVD, verified the CRC32 checksum, but on boot-up I get this message:

'DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER'

I have tried burning another two DVD's but get the same message.

I must be doing someything really silly here!

    Please can you help?

  • Thank you Ken, I knew I was doing something silly!
It would have been nice if guys at Microsoft could have made this clear.
I will get some 'proper' burning software now and try my luck again.
    Thanks again...

  • Did you try a different DVD drive?

  • Yes Ken, I tried the disk in my regular Vista machine and it booted up in Vista as usual and not from the WHS disk.

I then opened the DVD drive and the file 'Windows Home Server DVD.iso' is displayed, so it is there.

Does this throw any light on the problem?

    Thanks

  • A .iso file is a disk image. When written with the proper software, it will be turned into a fully functional installation disk. Some tools that can do this are Nero, Alcohol 120%, and ImgBurn. If you don't burn it with the proper software, you get a shiny coaster (I honestly can't think of an actual use for a DVD with a .iso file on it as a file). :)

  • Hey Ken I seem to be getting the same error.  I burnt my trial copy with Alcohol 120%.  I have a when I stick my disk in my external with my XP hard drive plugged in, the disk opens with the Restart Installation Instructions. So I disconect my XP IDE hard drive.  Set my BIOS to boot from USB CD-ROM and get the 'DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER' error.

  • If I understand correctly, you want to use an external hard drive as the target for installation of Windows Home Server, and you want to use a USB CD-ROM to install from?

First, I would recommend you select a computer that you can dedicate entirely to Windows Home Server. When installed, it will take over all hard drives in the system, reformatting them and adding them to the storage pool.

Second, I would not recommend trying to use an external drive as your boot drive. You'll have performance issues if it's a USB drive, and you'll probably also have reliability issues.

Third, the Windows Home Server installation media should be on a DVD. Even if you have an extended CD that supports that much data, it's a DVD-ROM .iso image.

Finally, consider an internal optical drive instead of a USB drive. Again you'll get better performance. In addition, some users have found that trying to boot the installation disk from a USB DVD-ROM just doesn't work; it either bluescreens, loops on the first phase of setup, or otherwise doesn't proceed.

  • Sorry Ken I wasn't as clear as I should have been.  All internal hard drives, just an external DVD-Rom drive I wanted to use to load the OS.  I found that updating my Bios resolved the issue.  Was able to successfully install WHS.  Now I am having a different issue and I am going to try and find a more appropriate thread to plead.  Thanks for your speedy reply!
