After power failure 1 of 4 drives is missing

Question
-
I rebooted our HP WHS after an overnight power failure. It holds 2 x 500 Gb and 2 x 1,000 Gb drives. One of the 500 Gb drives has a status of Missing. I assume the drive has crashed. It is cool to touch.
All shared folders not Empty have duplication On except the Shared folder for software installation programs: it has duplication Off and contains the folders Addins, Home PC Restore CD, Home Server Connector Software.
What are the steps to get the machine back into working order? Do I simply replace the dead drive with a new one of the same size and the WHS will rebalance?
Thanks.
Patrick.

If the drive is dead (and I agree it sounds like it is) use the console to remove it from the storage pool, then remove the drive itself from your server. It's possible that you'll be warned about files you'll lose, or backups; if this occurs, the data is already lost (when the drive failed), so all you can really do is accept the loss and move on. If you've lost backups, use the repair function in the console to repair the backup database. If you've lost files they'll obviously be from the software folder. Depending on exactly what was lost, you may need to go through a server recovery to regain the missing files.

Thanks Ken. I haven't used the WHS's backup feature as I could never get it to work so I have simply used Scheduled Tasks to run Windows Backups. Should I replace the dead 500 Gb drive with one of the same size or can I safely put a 1 Tb drive in there instead? I would then have 1 500 and 3 1,000's.Tuesday, January 19, 2010 1:49 AM
