Microsoft office fails validation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello knowledgable people

    Forgive the new thread but this is a familiar problem to you and I could not see the point in me tacking my case onto any of the others in these forums . My scenario is this

    I have a PC built myself 2003 and installed XP Pro plus MS Office 2003 purchased on Ebay.  Registered with MS, the pope and Henry Kissenger . All validated OK and have reinstalled over the past 4 years on the same PC with no hardware changes.

    Bought a Laptop on Internet with XP preinstalled. Installed Office on this as per terms of my EULA. Previous updates have been successful.

    Tonight, I have attempted an MS Office update and guess what - failed the validation test!!!.

    2 hours later, I am still mucking about with it and quite frankly can see why all the others on these  forums are hacked off by this "genuine advantage"

    Here is the copy of my product.

    Over to you chaps to give me the bad news

  • DodgeyRodger,

    Your MS Office 2003 is a Volume Licensing Edition (VLK) and the Product Key used to install it is Blocked.

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2

    This is not because you installed it twice--as you noted some editions of Office (Retail licenses) can be installed on two computers, a desktop and a laptop owned by the same person.  It is because you have a Volume Licensing Edition, which not only should you not have, but furthermore the Volume Licensing Key is now blocked.

    The other bad news is that in due course you'll be notified that the Office on your desktop is also Nongenuine because it is the same Blocked VLK.

    When you click Help>About in any Office program, look for the Product ID (PID) reported.  The second set of numbers tell you the licensing type.  Any 64x number (ie, 640 thru 649) means it's a VL installation.  OEM means that license was preinstalled on the computer by the computer manufacturer and is ONLY good on THAT particular computer and cannot be moved to any other computer.  Pretty much all other three digit numbers mean it's a retail license.

    Have a look at this part of the WGA FAQ:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EYAAE
