I have over 2000 "lost" files in \GacBase\HoldingArea. How do I find out what folders/sub-folders they were in? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I removed a sync'd folder from live mesh since it appeared all the files were deleted.
    I now know better but . . . Now I have over 2000 "lost" files in \GacBase\HoldingArea.

How do I find out what folders/sub-folders they were in?

  • Manually move them back is about the only solution I'm aware of. Yes, that will be painful with 2,000 plus files in the holding area with no clue which ones came from where.

A little late, but since Live Mesh is a beta, you should always have a backup of critical files that you are synchronizing with Live Mesh in a location not included in the Mesh folders.

  • How did you remove the folder?
The Holding Area is where conflicts go until they are resolved - and where they will stay if a conflict is not resolved. Deleting an folder from a PC that is a Mesh folder can cause this issue.
As far as I know, there is no way to easilt identify the folder structure where each file was located. When you go to the Notifier on that PC, are conflicts shown?
Do the files exist on other devices or the Live Desktop in your Mesh?

  • the files are the same on another device. both computer had all the files in conflict. the data was too big to sync with the desktop.

However, when I do a search with vista it says the file is still in the original location even though it is in the holding area. I can't do this for everyfile.  Do you know if there is a way to view the vista search index?

  • I'm not aware of any way to view the search index.

I'm unclear on what you actually did, though. How did you remove the folder? Where did you remove it from? Both PCs, the Mesh, or one PC?

  • I removed both computers from the mesh. I didn't understand about the conflicts and how to resolve them.
Since I didn't have live mesh running all the time I just opened the folder and I didn't have the sidebar to tell me about conflicts.
I just saw all the directories empty. I thought the files were just getting deleted.  Now I know better.

I tried to sync the folders again after I found out about resolving conflicts and they are kept in the holding area.
but the files in the holding area just seem stuck there I want them back in there original places.

Does anyone know if there is away to do that?
