Windows 7 Home Premium bought from eBay - Not Genuine after 3 months RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I bought Win 7 Home Premium from eBay that came with both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs. It had legitimate COA and DVD with original hologram. The activation went fine on June, 2011. Life was good till September 15. Since September 16, Windows started with a black desktop screen saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine". Here is my MGADiag output. Can anyone please tell me what's wrong?

  • As Carey has already said, you have been scammed.

Actually your entire box, including the COA and fake hologram are all a counterfeit product made in China.  There are tens of thousands of these on eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, and the discount websites.  Here is my standard reply.  Be sure to view the video.

Your Product ID line shows that you are using an MSDN product key.  Since you are not the subscriber who was issued this product key, it is invalid for your use.

    Windows Product ID: 00359-232-8020146-86166

The 232 is the MSDN indicator.  Your "retail" box and its contents is a counterfeit product.  Many counterfeit copies are being sold on eBay and the Amazon Marketplace as well as various websites around the world.  The product key is not a genuine retail PK.  It is a genuine MSDN product key and so activated and passed as genuine until it was blocked by Microsoft as an MSDN key in use by a nonsubscriber.  It takes a while for MS to detect and complete processing of abused keys.

Pursue a refund for an item not as described immediately.  Do not accept a replacement product key from the seller.  It will be from the same source.

Report the incident to Microsoft at

Buy a copy of Windows from a rock solid seller like the Microsoft Store or Amazon Corp (not an affiliate).

  • Please submit a Counterfeit Software Report to Microsoft and hopefully you'll qualify for a genuine Windows 7 license.  What you have now is counterfeit.

  • Thanks Carey and Colin for your answers. I have already submitted a "Counterfeit Software Report" to Microsoft and sent the entire box and the DVDs to them. I am also telling all my friends not to buy any Windows or Office products from eBay or Amazon Marketplace.
