What happens if there is a hardware failure? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Let's say you have a WHS server thats been humming along for a few years, then all of a sudden you get a catastrophic failure that you can't identify, like the mobo going bad, power supply, memory, etc.

If the internal/external drives contain all the data, how would you get those drives installed into a new hardware platform without losing anything?

  • Hi,
nobody can give you a guarantee, that you don't loose anything. Some factors may even demolish the entire server - this is what the Backup Server function is for, which is recommended to do regulary to one or more external disks (and maybe put one of these offsite, so that the important data in Shared folders is still there also in case of fire or theft).
If the disks are still alive, often a server reinstall can solve the behavior relatively smoothly.
Other than that, this FAQ can help you to understand, how files can be recovered, if that method should not work.
    Best greetings from Germany
