I could not determine from Realtex web site which was the correct download.
When I typed in 'C-Media AC 97 Audio Driver' it did not recognize that. When I typed in AC97 it gave me some other downloads.

Hi here is the solution for your problem....You will need to take the case off the computer and look at your sound card or if its onboard your motherboard for the c media chip note down the number of that chip then click this link and download your drivers.

Ihad the same problem spent days trying to work it out to find the best thing was to put in a new plug and play, creative sound card ,go to you local pc shop and get one probable $25 au
problem solved [unplug your pc] just take the side of you pc and put it in one of the empty slots,
plug your pc back in and make sure you plug your speaker into the sound card you have just installed load computer and problem solved .
I even went to c-media forum and they them selves cant work it out! spent hours on every forum reading the same thing over and over no fix ,
my story so you can work it out for you self:
reformated pc installed windows xp pro ,then no sound !! I m sure the drivers were on the hdd
and when reformating it like everything else its gone and c-media have updated there drives so
much that you try to install it and you dont get anywhere, they probably need to just go back to the origanal driver, but try finding that !! and this driver detective every site you look at is him,
maybe he has the origanal driver and is making every body pay for it !!!
I was ready to throw my pc ,now releived after so many hours , stop banging your head agianst a wall its not worth it, bye hope this helped

I hope that you got your problem fixed. My comp. is doing the same exact thing now, Code 10 on the ac97. Is there a site where I can download this driver for free. Or is buying a sound card a better idea? Anyone who might know please let me know. Thanks, insineratem

I had he same problem after downloading a microsoft update for the C-media ac97 audio device after my computer maker went out of business-6 to 8 months ago. I am using a laptop I purchased from PC Club. I cannot get updates from PC Club.- this is when I started having problems with this audio. Try to roll back your audio driver in the device manager and do not download the AC-Media Update from microsoft until it is fixed. When it will be fixed???????. I read previous threads that states the AC-media techs do not know whats going on. If this does not work try going back to a restore point when your audio last worked. You will have to download any other updates needed for oyher applications since the restore point- BUT DO NOT DOWNLOAD C-MEDIA AUDIO DEVICE FROM MOCROSOFT. Sorry for yelling. This has happened to me 5 times. If all fails you will have to reinstall the originall driver that came with your computer.
PS: My cd rom does not work- hardware/software conflict?????
