DHCP - Gateway IP Different Network then My IP Address - Public WiFi

    Question

  • (Please post this to the correct topic if this isn't correct; I couldn't find the most appropriate area: My apologies)
    Dear Users;

    I’m using public WiFi and my OS (Windows 10 Home) notified me that DHCP is setting MY IP address to a different network then the Gateway is on.  My question:

    Is this a sign of intrusion, or a possible attempt thereof?

    I’m providing command prompt information; first, for the original connection where the addresses are on different networks, then, where I set my IP address.  Further, I didn’t think that on a public WiFi network I’d be able to dictate my desired IP address, but such IS the case.

    (NOTE: I did set my DNS servers to that of Google public as such:)
    IPv4: 8.8.8.8   |   8.8.4.4
    IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888  |  2001:4860:4860::8844
    ...of which anyone can do if exhibiting DNS Server Resolution Problems

    I've put in BOLD Underline my address and the Gateway address for simplicity in noticing my question; notice the difference; "5" and "4", then where I dictated my address and changed the "5" to a "4", the same as the Gateway.

    And again, my question most directly is; should I be alarmed by  DHCP setting my IP address to a different network then the Gateway is on, and then, is it normal to be able too change ones IP Address on a Public WiFi network?  This network happens to be that of Walmart's in Saint Augustine, Florida

    Thanks for all/any help!
