Suggestion: In categories list, show which forums are locked. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Suggestion for the forum software:

When viewing the list of forums, show which ones have been locked (maybe just include the little lock icon beside threads that have been locked.)

i.e. this list:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories has a lot of old forums in there that are not active.  It would be nice to see which ones are in active use and which ones are locked.

  • I actually don't really understand what you mean.

When clicking on your link, I see some of my forums, I've been to. (Not really sorted by recent activity of mine)

Beside that, whenever you see a reply, you think is helpful, click "Vote As Helpful"! And whenever you see a reply being an answer to the main question of the thread, click "Mark As Answer" (if you opened the thread).

I published the URL's for the icons in my signature.

Please contact me, before reporting me, thank you.

  • Click on this link: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories, then click on the All Forums tab.  Most of those forums are locked and useless for posting questions, but there's no way to tell except to look at them one by one.

  • So I used your link and clicked on All Forums. The following image shows my browser:

I clicked on several links there and only one was locked (the one that said "Archived" in brackets). It's just a simple list with all avaiable forums but not even one of them was locked for me (except the one I told you already).

I checked like 10 different forums.

OK, so in trying to clarify I accidentally added a step that made my original point less clear, because I happen to point you to the one list of forums that actually groups the archived forums together (the All Forums tab does, in fact, group the locked forums together at the bottom.)  But every other list of forums has no indicator of whether the forum is active or not.

Another example of a list of forums:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/user/forums   If you happen to subscribe to a forum that is archived then it will be in that list, but won't appear any different from others until you click on it.

I'm just proposing that archived forums always be shown with a "lock" icon or something like that.

  • Now I understand what you mean. But I still didn't found any forum, being archived, except for the one that says it's archived.

But how even comes, you subscribe to an archived forum? Did you earlier subscribe it and than it got archived?

Even tough the icon would be a good idea.

  • Here's a good example forum. You'll only see the locked icon in front of the title but not anywhere else. You can also not reply to any thread.

Also if you check through the "All Forums" category, you wont find out that it's locked there, except you click on it AND you look in front of the title there.
