Links from German MSDN site into US site are wrong or don't work RRS feed

  • Question

  • All Forum links from the Forums/de-DE site to the en-US site don't work.

    Example:

    1. I start at "My Threads"  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/de-de/user/threads?user=Martin%20Richter
    2. I have usually links to the German Forums but some Forums like the MVP Forums seam to be hosted on the en-US site.
      I find a link named:
      http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/de-DE/home?forum=mvpgerman
    3. If I follow this link I am in a nowhere land... I see one Forum "Microsoft Money" :(
    4. Only http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=mvpgerman leads me to the correct site.
    5. OK now I am on the en-US site. If I use now the "My Forum" links to a German Forum I am lost again.

For me as a German working with English and German Forums the new structure is a complete Horror.

  • You're not the only one.

That it doesn't even show posts when clicking on a German forum is in my opinion stupid aswell, that you need to activate "All Languages" is annoying everytime.

Beside that, whenever you see a reply, you think is helpful, click "Vote As Helpful"! And whenever you see a reply being an answer to the main question of the thread, click "Mark As Answer" (if you opened the thread).

I published the URL's for the icons in my signature.

If you have got questions about this, just ask.

  • For me as a German working with English and German Forums the new structure is a complete Horror.

I used to try starting with the MVP forums but the same sort of thing happens with them.  The MVPforum "brand" sticks with anything I try to do with the other URLs.  In fact, some of them work, proving that the MVPforum brand is mostly just about style but then I would have to be careful about removing that path level from any URL that I would cite.  So I have mostly forgotten about going to the MVPforums and just stay with My Threads in the other more conventional "brand" patterns.

But even doing that led to problems.  For example, if I had posted a reply in a forum that I do not have in my subscription list while I had My Threads open in the Microsoft "brand" and it was not a Microsoft brand forum then if I tried to go to that forum I would get a confusing message about "No threads" being found.  The fix is to overwrite the URL in the Address bar so the correct "brand" is used by the navigation and rendering.

  • try adding &brandIgnore=true to the url

Which one?  It doesn't get propagated if I add it to my MVP forums URL, so I still need to either delete that level when I get to My Threads (my current workaround) or append this.  If it worked I could use Alt-d, End, and type & to reduce typing with AutoComplete after I had done it once.  So that would be somewhat comparable to Click, Ctrl-Backspace, Delete.  However testing this has reminded me of the most annoying aspect about these new branding changes.   Previously the incorrectly branded URL would be complete and then could be easily corrected.  Now, all I get is an unbranded non-specific Page Not Found URL.  The only clue that gives me about what I was trying to do, e.g. when loading a tab with Middle-click on a Last Reply link, is the Message-ID.  No information about the thread, the forum or the brand.  And now that they have us mixing our forums and don't allow Message-ID to be used with Find or Search that is even more useless and irritating because when I am concentrating on just finding something interesting to look at I don't always look up to the Tab labels to see if the new tab is going to be showing me what I would be expecting.  In any case, often, in this scenario I would have so many tabs opened that the new one's label could not be read immediately and would just be waiting there making its uselessness and irritation even greater later.   ; ]
