Windows XP system file corruption

  I am running Windows XP Media Center with service pack 3. Recently I was infected with a virus that took control of my desktop for  a short time. After eliminating the virus/adware with Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender I noticed that I couldn't open certain properties wndows by right clicking and several of my Control Panel sub categories are just not opening. I did some research and found that I will have to install the Recovery Console with a Windows XP recovery disk. I filled out the proper form and am still waiting for the disk. Any suggestions for a workaround or can someone please tell me if my recovery disks are coming?
