Error Loading Operating System RRS feed

  • Question

  • Last night, for some reason unknown, my WHS rebooted (despite being on an UPS) and then displayed:

Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0 . . OK
    Boot Failure from previous Device
Searching for Boot Record from IDE-1 . . OK
    Error Loading Operating System

After booting from the DVD, it sees all the HDs in the machine, even displays the 20GB system partition on the first drive. (they show up as RAW)

It then gives me only the option to perform a New Installation.

I removed the drives and attached them to another machine, but they show up as unallocated space only. The external USB drive I was using shows up OK when attached to another machine, with parts of my data.

Is all hope lost for the drives which are now "unallocated"?

  • Well, a partition that shows up as raw indicates that the operating system believes it to be unformatted. I think that something has damaged your partition table and/or your MBR. Your best bet would be to use disk editor software (I use Acronis tools, but there are other good options out there) on the affected drives on some other PC to see if you can recover the partition tables.
