Windows has been activated with my product key too many times

  I've recently built a computer and part of that was buying Windows XP Pro.  I've had a few software problems so I've had to reinstall windows a few times (I think this is the third.)  But when I try to activate it now it says:

  "According to our records, the number of times you can activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded.  Please enter a different product key, and then click Retry.... " (Message number 45092)

  How many times can you activate it with the same product key, and is there an easy way to sort this out?
