Forums Need Reorganization RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I think you need to implement a hierarchical tree of forums.  The list of available forums is WAY too long.  I would suggest something like this:

    MSDN
      Site Feedback
      Subscriber Downloads
      ...
    Operating Systems
       XP
      Vista
      Windows 7
    Developer Tools
      Visual Studio
        VS2003
        VS2005
        VS2008
        Team System
      Visual SourceSafe
      Expression
    Database
      SQL Server
        2005
        2008
      SQL Server Express
        2005
        2008

I think you get my point.

  • It depends on the product.

There are ca 12 SharePoint forums. They could maybe reasonably drop about three of them.

Your system would give a single forum for each generation of SharePoint. It isn't enough, as there are so many different "faces" of SharePoint that there are specialists in the various aspects of it. A simple example would be that developers writing code are typically not interested in Admin issues and vice versa but there are also workflow specialists; InfoPath specialists; SharePoint Designer specialists etc. etc. and all would be forced in your structure to post to a single SharePoint 2007 forum.

  • But you do admit that a reorganization of the forums would be of significant benefit?

  • As I wrote in "my" set of forums there are ca 12 forums of which maybe three could go as they are not well delimited and so get posts that ought really to go in one of the other forums.

Losing those would be a benefit but minor. (not "significant")

However a re-organisation would always be of some benefit. I have recently acquired a forum in the SharePoint set that is way off-topic and which should never have been placed there (it's for a beta System Center Management Pack).

It's proving impossible to get the (Microsoft) people who created it as a SharePoint forum to move it to a set of System Center forums (of which there are many - a good place to start your re-organisation perhaps as there should not need to be different *sets* of forums for the same product) so a complete re-organisation may have that as a good side-effect.
