invalid windows for vista(your windows is not valid error messages) RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer has been giving me problems and I am not sure of the cause it just started one day. I have done the following things that I have found under other help things and it is still not working right. It keeps telling me that my windows is not valid and that I might be a victim of software pirating or stealing and it wants me to validate my windows vista but it wont go through. My computer also wont let me open control panels or anything like that. I also included the diagnostic report which I downloaded and ran. I hope that someone can please help  me my windows vista is valid it came with  my computer when I bought it over a year ago.(it’s a compaq). here are some of the error codes i have recieved when trying to fix my computer: 0xC0000022, 0x80070426,
    Thank you

    Samantha

    I have already done this

    ·         In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report it shows the error code "Online Validation Code: 0x80070426". This means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped. Windows Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Windows Vista is unable to confirm its own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Please try the first set of steps and if it does not resolve the issue, move on to the next set.

The first sets of steps are how to set the Software Licensing Service to start at each Windows Vista Start-up.

     1. Click Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

    3. The Services window should now open

    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing, then right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Under the General tab, click Stop button.

    6. Set the Startup Type to Automatic, and then click Apply

    7. Next, under Service Status, click Start button.

    8. Last, restart your computer.

The second set of steps is the Manual steps to Force Start the Software Licensing Service. Once you type the net start slsvc command and hit Enter, if you receive any error, then, for some reason, Windows Vista is not processing the command correctly and the issue is larger than just a Software Licensing problem. In which case, I would suggest contacting Windows Vista support below: http://support.microsoft.com

If you have access to the Start button:

    1) Click Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

  • Hello sruggiero16,

The problem is that your Vista's Software Licensing Service has stopped. Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Vista is unable to confirm it's own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Normally this is not a big problem, since you can just restart the Service. However, we have seen a number of users that receive an error when they attempt to restart the Service. This indicates a more serious 'root cause' to the service having stopped.

When you attempted to restart the Service (using the "net start slsvc" command) what was the error message you received?

~If the error message was "System Error 3, The system cannot find the path specified." then go to the main Vista Validation forum page http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads/ , look in the announcment section and follow the steps found in thread "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems

~If you got any other error, record the exact message and post the message to this thread

    Thanks,
    Darin MS

  • Darin,
    Thanks for responding,
It uses to give me the system error 3 message but the last time i just did it again it told me that the software started successfuly. Although nothing seemed to change. I have restarted the computer x2. Is it possible that it stops after i started it? Should i dl spypot seach and destroy and try running that? or should i try doing this anyways even thought i dont get the system error 3 anymore (go to the main Vista Validation forum page http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads/ , look in the announcment section and follow the steps found in thread "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems" )??????????? When i tried to run sfc /scannow the screen just popped up real quick and than disappeared just like my control panel does. Im affraid my computer has been like this for more than 30 days not and now has limited functioning due to my computer failing the validation. Please help!
    Thanks

  • Hi Samantha,

If you have received the system error 3, in the past, then Yes, I suggest following the System Error 3 fix. It won't hurt and it may resolve your issue.

Keep me posted on if the issue has been fixed,
    Darin

  • Darin,
So I did it and not only did it not fix my computer but now my computer is running really slow and lagging, as well as it did not even load all of my gadgets on my desktop. I dont know what else to do????  When i tried to validate it on windows wepage it still told me it was invalid and when i tried to do the updates it gave me the same error code 0x80070426 that i have recieved before. Although when i to the net start slsvc it tells me that the licensing is started succesfully so i do not understand what the problem  could be and what i should do from here. I hope that you have a resolution, thank you again for your help i really appreciate it.
    Samantha

i also ran the system scan and it started fine and said validation was 100% complete and i restarted it after that and it didnt change anything either so i decided to do the diagnostic tool again and it shows a few changes , i am not sure what they mean but the changes are in bold

  • Hi Samantha,

Just want to get a bit more information.

Do you use an Anti-virus program?  and if so, have you scanned recently?

Have you changed anything in your computer recently (added or removed any software or hardware)?

Reboot your computer and then follow the below steps. besure to recod the information asked.

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc
    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
    3. The Services window should now open.
    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing,
What does it say under 'Status'?

What does it say under 'Startup Type'?
(If the 'Startup Type' is anything other then 'Automatic', right-click the service and select 'Properties' then set "Startup Type" to "Automatic"

    5. Right-click on the service and select Stop (if available)
If the Service was started, did it now stop without error?

    6. Right-click on the service and select Start
    Did it start without error?

    7. Reboot

    Thank you,
    Darin

  • Darin,
The first thing i did was run norton virus, it did nothing. I have done every system scan possible besides defrag.
I am not sure if anything has been added or removed, windows told me to delete any upsates and programs etc prior to when i was having problems and i did and nothing happened. The only ones that i did not remove is desktop doctor provided by comcast my intetnet provider and network magic which i have been using for a while now and it came with either my computer or router etc.

now i did what you said and this is what happened, everytime i do there services.mcs thing the licensing is always stopped and if i restart it it was restart for a minute or two and than stop again. (the startup type was already on automatic)I started it and than stopped it right away, it would not let me stop it and gave me the following error: Windows could not stop the software liscensing service on a local computer. Error 0x0000006: 0x0000005. No matter if i reboot or not i have the same result i have tried both. ALso when i do the cmd and attempt to start it that way it says that it starts and does not give me an error but than when i check it it has already stopped.

So in result i can get the licensing to start but it automatically stops a few moments later.

Thank you again, i really appreciate it

  • Hi  Samantha,

I need you (if you are willing) to create a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 (make sure you include a phone number that you don't mind us contacting you at).  and the post the Confirmation number in this thread.

This is probably the strangest version of the 'Software Licensing has stopped (and won't restart)' issue, that I have seen and while I have a feeling that it may be a new type of Malware (it's not uncommon for Anti-Virus software to lag a few weeks when a new Malware is found), I still want my engineer to look into it, just in case it's not malware related.

    Thanks Samantha!

  •    Samantha,

That URL that I gave you should take you to the "Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage" E-mail support page.  There should be a single button in the middle of the page that says "Start E-Mail Request".  This that what you are seeing?  If not, what part of the world do you live in?  Microsoft's support pages can sometimes be different for different parts of the world.

Unfortunatly, because of policy, I can't direct you to any 3rd party products. But I can direct you to PC Safety.  They are a Microsoft group that provides free help with Malware infections.
