Scope of "Microsoft Office for IT Professionals" forum RRS feed

    Just now, a message I had replied to in the  "Microsoft Word for IT Professionals" forum was moved to the "Off-topic posts" forum. It seems that it was moved because it was a Mac Word 2011 issue.

    But

     a. the forum intro and scope notice says this (the italics are mine)

     b. although both this post and the follow-up mention the Answers forums as another possible place to get help, neither of them mentions the Mac Office forums that have been there for about a year.

    So,

     c. can someone tell me whether or not Mac Office (and perhaps other Mac software) is completely out of scope for Technet altogether?

     d. if not, are there forums here specifically for Mac Office issues?

     e. if not, are the "Office" groups supposed to cater for Mac Office issues

     f. if not, could the forum's scope text and pointers to other groups be clarified and improved?

    As a little bit of background to this, I have been participating in the Answers groups and their predecessors (and to a certain extent the MSDN and Technet groups) for a long time, and only a couple of days ago one of the longstanding Mac MVPs there warned someone off posting in the MSDN groups because of "hostility" towards Mac. Personally I don't think it is hostility (and I know that this is Technet, not MSDN) but it seems to me that a service that exists to answer questions from customers should perhaps find a better way to redirect genuine posts than to dump them with no further assistance into some kind of sinbin.

    Depends. IT pro work in the IT department and IT pro questions are related to their job as a network administrator. So if your questions is, say, if massively deploy or manage Office for Mac on a few hundreds of iOS machines from a central server, or how Office for Mac interact with an existing SharePoint server, then yes it is IT pro question and belong to technet.

    Yes, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac. This is for consumers questions that do not involve enterprise networks.

    Hello Sheng Jiang,

    I appreciate that you responded, but the key point here is that the question I referenced is no more out of scope than any of the other Word IT Pro questions posted in the group I referenced. If its scope statement should exclude Mac-related questions, it could easily have been changed since I posted, but it is just the same.

    If Technet wants to drive away people whose first port of call was the Technet groups, that is up to Technet.

    The scope of Technet is not decided by product. Rather it is decided by the help offered and needed. There are Office forums on Technet, MSDN and Answers, depends on the help you need is managing, programming or using Office.

    Technet is not for all techs. There are technology in MSDN and Microsoft answers too. It is just a marketing name. 

    You should choose forum based on where the similar questions are frequently answered, not frequently asked but hopelessly buried.
