Geggs,
Please run IE as Administrator:
Running IE7 as an administrator process (i.e. using the real Vista Administrator login account) will automatically turn off IE7 Protected Mode.
Also, if you’ve turned off Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC), IE7 will also turn off Protected Mode automatically.
1) Right-click IE7 shortcut icon in the Quick Launch toolbar and select Run as Administrator, or
2) Click the Vista Start button, type
Internet
in the Start Search Vista-Search box, right-click Internet Explorer in Program listing and click the Run as Administrator option, or3) Locate “Internet Mode: On” in the IE7 status bar (bottom-right of IE7 window) and double-click on it. Unchecked the check-box for “Enable Protected Mode (Requires restarting Internet Explorer)”

and try to re-validate office again.
I hope this helps,

This has now been resolved. There was a confilct with the MS Office trial on my new pc and the MS Office 2007 disc. I spoke to tech support and the nice gent remote to my pc, sorted out the registry and installed the full office 2007, he even validated for me. Excellent service all round.
Take care
