Customize Server Backup query RRS feed

  • Question

  • When "customizing server backup", on the page where you "select which items to backup", what does the "System Backup" checkbox include that the "Operating system" checkbox does not, at present they seem confusing as no explanation is displayed?

As a side note does anyone think that the Customize server backup wizard needs a back button, especially when you get to the confirm page.

  • The Vail server backup engine is the Windows Server 2008 R2 backup engine, so the Windows Server Backup and Recovery documentation on Technet should explain things.

  • I reviewed the Windows Server Backup and Recovery documentation for Windows Server 2008 R2, but it would still be nice to have descriptions of each of the options in the Server Backup within Vail.  I can't determine what is included in the following:

    • System Backup (what is included with this?)
    • Operating System (what does this include, how is it differenct than "System Backup"?)
    • Shadow Copies (what does this include?)

What is recommended for backing up WHS Vail V2?

  • I agree.. I found the various backup descriptions very ambiguous and the link provided does not make it any clearer. In fact if anything it makes it all the more confusing.

    • System backup = System state. You use it for restoring the system to a previous state when you have an issue.
    • Operating system = C:.
    • Shadow Copies supports previous versions functionality (for desktop operating systems that can access previous versions of file).

Back it all up. Everything. This is what's required for bare metal restore capability.

Use two drives, and rotate them off-site regularly. This will allow bare metal restore with a recent copy of your data.
