Is it possible to show the balance on 'open invoices' on the account entity form

It is possible.
One way to do it is to write plugins on Post Create and Post Update of Invoice to update the balance (field) on Account.

If it just a visualisation you require, add a sub-grid to the invoice and set to display chart only. If you add a chart to total by invoice status, you can then see the values of invoices by status on your account form. If you need the actual value on your account than Mamatha's solution will work. If you prefer a simple 3rd party add on to do this, try Auto Summary (http://www.gapconsulting.co.uk/our-solutions/essentials/auto-summary-for-crm2013) Rob
