Two alternating off-site backup drives? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to have two external backup drives, and use them alternately? I would like to have one at home and one offsite at all times, and switch them once a month or so, so that there is always one copy in a safe place.

If I just change the destination settings before each backup, will the system be smart enough to look at only the current target disk to determine what has changed, or is there something stored on the server itself keeping track of changes?

  • Yes, you can have two (or more) backup drives.
    • In the WHS console, on the Server Storage tab, right click the backup drive and select Remove.
    • Ensure that Temporarily remove it from my home server is selected, and click OK.
    • Disconnect the drive and take it off site.
    • When you reconnect the drive it will automatically be detected and added as a backup drive again.
You can have more than one backup drive registered with the server, and alternate them using the above steps.
