This problem is believed to be caused by v6 Avast - if you're using that, the best thing to do is to uninstall it, and install MSE after validating your system and updating the system to Service Pack 2 level..

Avast v6 has only been out for a couple of weeks or so - there has been a trail of woe in this forum ever since with people having the same error as yourself.
Since you say that you're having problems with SP2/Windows updates, please provide a full MGADiag report - it may show why.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
