Windows Vista activation key not valid/This copy of Windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have had this laptop for about 3 years now.  We recently had to take it in to our repair guy and he re-installed Windows Vista for us.  The laptop has worked great since then (several weeks now) until this past weekend.

We started getting a pop up notice to activate Windows.  I was hesitant to click on it until I could talk with our computer guy.  In the meantime our desktop background would disappear anytime we shutdown or restarted the machine.  Then this morning when I started the computer up the lower right hand corner had the message:  "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine".

I called our repair guy and he said that this sometimes happens with a re-install.  He said to go ahead and activate Windows.  When I go in to do that, before I even get to a place to type in the activation key, the box that opens says "The Windows Vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation".

It follows with the options:  "Buy a New Product Key online", "Type a different product key", or "Contact Microsoft to help resolve this problem".  I chose the second option using the product key on the bottom of our machine and got the message "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows Vista product key.  Please check your product key and type it agian."  I checked the key and retyped and got the same message.  Note that I am never given the option of doing a phone activation.  What I have typed above is all that ever shows up in the activation window.

Here are the results I get when running the MGA diagnostic tool: *NOTE* the last three sets of numbers shown for the product key do not match the label on the bottom of my computer

Can someone please help me figure out what is wrong and how to fix it?  Or at least provide a way to talk to a real live person as the "Contact Microsoft to help resolve this problem" option in my activation window lead me to a page that had me try to activate which opened the same window I already had open.

  • So, after all the time I've spent fighting with this problem and checking and rechecking the product key, it appears I should actually be checking by eyeglasses prescription -- I was mistaking a "B" for an "8".  Once I typed the key in *properly* everything was fine.  I even restarted my computer twice to be sure that everything "stuck".  Sheesh, do I feel silly.

    Thanks for your help. :-)

For some reason, your computer is unable to match the BIOS data to its internal certificates - you need to change the Product Key to the one on your COA Sticker, using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System Properties page. You will then probably have to activate by telephone.

You're welcome - I've done it myself all too many times, so I know exactly how you feel!

    Good Luck!
