Windows 7 Genuine Advantage Validation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a computer with pre-installed Windows 7 Pro from Cyberpower last July. It ran fine for several months, then stopped updating in October, and now several programs don't even run. I'm pretty certain it really is a genuine copy, but somewhere along the way some files have been corrupted. I see a lot of tampered files below. So I'm looking for a way to fix it obviously

  • Try repairing the system files.

Click Start, type 'cmd' in the Search/Run box, and right click on the CMD icon at the top of the results pane.  Select Run as Administrator.  When the cmd window opens type 'sfc /scannow' at the prompt and hit Enter.  When the scan completes close the cmd window.

Post another copy of the diagnostic report.

  • See if you can do a system restore back far enough to clear the issue.

    1) Click the Start button
    2) In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit “Enter”
    3) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says
"Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that
corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.
    4) Click the "Next" button.
    5) Reboot and see if that resolves the issue.

  • I don't have any restore points. Yeah, I know. And I didn't receive a disc when I bought it either, and I didn't ever think to make one. I don't know what the deal is with not having any restore points. When I first saw what was going on there was a restore point but it didn't take the system back far enough to fix it.

I've been getting the genuine windows errors for only a couple months, but the last time any Windows software updated was October 14th, with the exception of a couple programs like Defender, Visual C++, Silverlight, .NET framework, and the malware removal tool.

I realize that its looking more like I'm going to have to re-install windows, but that's going to mean purchasing a new copy. I'd like to avoid that of course.

  • See if recreating the licensing store helps.  Then post a new diagnostic.

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field

  • I followed the steps above, Activation came up automatically, then I ran the diagnostic again but at the end I clicked copy and it said "failed to create output files" and wouldn't copy the data. I tried it a couple times and it said the same thing. I tried to validate again too from the WGA site and got this again.

    Install genuine Windows.

Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows. Not to worry, we can help you with that.

Don't worry about the MGADiag error message - the report will still paste into your response.

  • The files are still showing as Mismatched/Tampered.  At this point, I recommend contacting Microsoft Assisted Support (at one of the below URLs) for further assistance.

  • Tony,

I have the identical problem and followed your trek through the suggestions. Would you care to post your most recent status on resolving this issue?

A rather weird quirk on mine is if I open the Computer > Properties window, the activation ID and status refreshes automatically to Activated and the correct product key is displayed in about 15 seconds after opening the window.

Did you perhaps alter the permissions on the Windows folder?

    Thanks

    Nico

Please post your own MGADiag report in a NEW thread - this avoids confusion for all, and helps ensure that you get the best advice.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
