HD crash on a PC, how do I recover the files backed up on home server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 2 PC's in the house where I have recently had HD failures. I have rebuilt the PC's, reloaded XP and now need to connect back to Home Server to recover the backed up files. When I have connected the PC's bak to Homer Server a new profile now exists for each PC. How do I change this so I cn back up to files that existed before the HD failures

Each computer has a unique ID associated with it in terms of backups.  You needed to restore your entire computer from your backups.  Otherwise, you will have exactly what happened.  Your only options now are A) restore your 2 clients that recently failed from your backups on your server or B) restore single files from those backup to your clients, then delete the old client backups from your server and start fresh.

  • Windows Home Server offers two backup modes. You can perform single file restores to get specific files from a backup, or you can perform a bare metal restore (using the Restore CD) to the same or functionally identical hardware (i.e. same type of processor, same motherboard, same MB peripherals, etc.)

If you rebuilt the PCs using the same or identical hardware, you should be able to just do bare metal restores to both of them. If you changed out motherboards, processors, etc. then you will probably have to restore individual files. You won't be able to recover your installed software in this case, but will need to reinstall it. But as long as the PCs are joined with your server, you can open a backup from any PC on any other PC in your house (as long as you're logged in to that PC using an account with admin privileges). So it doesn't really matter in this case that the PCs aren't being seen as the same ones you were backing up previously.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
