Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a Toshiba laptop from Tescos preloaded with Bindows 7 Home Premium but i keep getting the Windows 7 build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine. I have run the diagnostic tool below but the product key that is on the diagnostic is not my product key. I run a full AVG with malware regularly and have called Digital help but this is the third time it has happened this time around.

The first time it happened in February I had to reboot my whole machine and rebuild it.

    What do I do now?

Do you need my product code or do we not put that on a forum?

    Joyce

NEVER post your Product Key (the one from the sticker) - whoever uses it first owns it!

As far as your problem goes, I'm afraid I'm not surprised at all (confused, but not surprised). I have no idea why you cannot properly activate with your COA Key - and can think of nothing that would leave your licensing in the current state.
A repair install may fix it - but you'd need a retail Vista disk for that - and a System Recovery would almost certainly fix it.

All I can think of short of those two rather drastic solutions is to point you in the direction of WGA Support....
    North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside North America:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

Please let us know if (and how)  MS manage to repair the problem without a repair install of the OS - it would be useful for future reference!

    Me again

I have just noticed that the partial product key further down the diagnosytic is aprt of my license key.

    Very odd -

    Windows Product Key: *****-*****-BFF84-6GFC2-BWX77
    Partial Product Key: HJ334
those two should read the same for the last group.
. I would suggest rebuilding the Licensing Store - this should get things back together properly.

Computers which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

    A)   OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the OEM Bios Flag found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows looks at the motherboard and sees the proper OEM Bios Flag (for that Manufacturer and that version of Windows) and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

    B)    COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (such as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

    Recreate the Licensing Store
        1) Click Start button.
        2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
        3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
        4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
        5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
        6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
        7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
        8) Type: net start sppsvc
        9) Type: slui.exe
        10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Run MGADiag again, and post the report

I ran it but I now have a black screen as a desktop whereas before I had my usual screen.

    Curiouser and curiouser :)
it's not made any difference whatever :(
The black screen is what should happen when you get a non-genuine issue - I had assumed that you already had one.
OK - let's try another route.....

    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI   3
    and hit the Enter key
accept the UAC prompt if you get one.
This should have brought up the Change Product Key Wizard - follow the instructions, and then activate by telephone.

Activation and Validation are two very different things - Activation is mandatory, while Validation is purely optional (unless you want IE9 or ME).
A system which is not Activated, but still within the grace period will always pass validation.
    Please post another MGADiag report.

  • Noel (sorry I called you Neil.)

Help - I have tried in every way to call someone at Microsoft and just go around in circles. I can't speak to anyone and keep being directed back to the web site which is you I am afraid!! Now my digital help people won't help me as they say it is a Microsoft problem - what do I do now??

  • hi again

I have just noticed the last message before the latest one I sent to you hasn't appeared in the thread so perhaps you didn't get it.

I looked at Computer properties as you suggested in your reply and it said it had been activated - so there was no way I could get a phone number to call them again. Sorry I said validated but I meant activated.

So i have a genuine copy  and it is activated so what is causing the problem, I am a bit scared of shutting it down as last time I did that it crashed.

I had this problem in February and had to rebuild the computer. After that it seemed Ok until this week.  I do not want to go down that route as you can imagine if it is going to happen again! I use the full version of AVG and it is scanned regularly.

The Digital help people that Toshiba suggested for support -  at first said it was a virus and they said thye had fixed it remotely but the message appeared again the next day so that is when he supposedly activated my license again. He did it remotely and did not call Microsoft  - but the message appeared again today. That is when I tried to contact Microsoft - you.

Could there be a conflict with two product keys?

The one i have been using is on the bottom of my computer.

    Snatching at straws!

    in the Search box, type

    SLUI   3

    and hit the Enter key

accept the UAC prompt if you get one.

This should have brought up the Change Product Key Wizard - follow the instructions, and then activate by telephone.

Noel - your last idea above

I just tried that again but when I hit enter I did not get a UAC prompt (whatever that is) it just brought up a box to authentic Windows and asked for my product key which i put in and it said it was authenticated.

Dare I try and restart my machine? I do have everything backed up but it took three days to rebuild it last time!!!

Go ahead and reboot - it shouldn't change anything in the way of data or programs.
Once you've done that, run another MGADiag report, and we'll see what we can see.

  • Hmm, I'm not seeing any obvious errors in the Diagnostic Report (however the "Partial Product Key: HJ334" still doesn't match the actual product key).

But if you are not seeing any Non-Genuine error then you should be ok. Just need to replace the black background with whatever background you wish (right-click on the desktop and select Personalize).

Once you get the background back to normal, reboot and see if the Non-Genuine error doesn't re-appear.  If no error, then it would seem your issue is resolved.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

  • Hi Darin

I changed the screen to my personal one and the error message reappeared then I rebooted and it has now gone.

I hope it has solved it all but will close down now and see what happens when i log in tomorrow - if it has gone I will say it has been answered.

  • I noticed there is an updated BIOS version for your Toshiba L500 laptop. (v2.10)

I would suggest you to update to it. Go to here & fill out the correct fields for your Laptop.

Make sure you have a FULLY charged battery before flashing it.

    I also have a Toshiba L500 Laptop btw. :)

I can however confirm that the OEM SLP serial in your first post IS NOT the same as mine. I am also using Home Premium.

This may or may not be the problem. But I am thinking this is the likely cause of the problem.

The Windows 7 OEM SLP serial which is on my Toshiba for Home Premium ends in W8DQG. (factory installed)

What i am thinking is, if I give you instructions to uninstall the OEM SLP serial which is currently in use on this system.

This will revert you back to trial status & you can try and install the OEM SLP Serial i am using for Home Premium from Toshiba. Then all that would be needed is for you then to Validate Online to become genuine again.

I think this might do it. :)
