Says I have mis typed my cd key during online check RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I have just reformatted my Dell Dimension 4600 desktop.  I used the cd key on the side of the tower and the install accepted the key.  Now when it wants to check online, a window pops up and tells me I have mis typed my cd key or the key is wrong?   I am using the Windows XP Home OEM so I don't know how this could be wrong?    Does any one have insite on what the problem could be?

And yes, I have checked and re-entered the number several times.

  • Hello Milkman,

I am assuming that when you say "when it wants to check online" you mean that you are activating your Windows over the Internet. My suggestion is to use the "Activate by Phone" method. (only takes a few min. more)

How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

    Hope this helped!
