Media Streaming Permissions RRS feed

  • Question

  • I logged into my server remotely to test streaming. The only thing that is available is Music. That is the only thing I turned on streaming for. My account has full access to the folders. Is there a way to give a "stream" permission to my account so I can stream from the web but only from my account?

  • There's no way to control permission for a single user to access your server's DLNA streaming capabilities. You can turn streaming off entirely for a share, but if it's turned on for a share, anyone who can access your server locally over your network, or remotely using the Remote Access web site, can stream any supported file in any share streaming has been turned on for.

  • The media streaming feature built into the remote access web site can be used by anyone you've granted the remote access permission to. This means that you can't grant a user permission to log in to the web site without also granting permission to stream media.

  • This doesn't seem to be the case on my new server install. I have full access to all media I would like to stream but on the right side of the remote access page- where it says media streamin the only thing populated is Music. I set up Music in the Media Streaming settings. The other folders just have sample streams and not the streams that are actually in the folder.

  • If you've only configured the Music share for streaming, that's all that will be visible in the streaming area of the Remote Access web site, no matter what files may exist in other folders. This is explained in the online help.

  • In your previous post you said:  "The media streaming feature built into the remote access web site can be used by anyone you've granted the remote access permission to." Your last comment contradicts this. I do not want all users to be able to stream. As in my original post, is there a way that I can stream any of the 3 listed folder on the right side of the remote access screen without giving read/stream to everyone?

    Thanks

  • There's no contradiction. You're conflating streaming and folder/share access permissions, when the two are really unrelated.

You grant a user the ability to use the Remote Access site. This gives that user the ability to stream anything (in a supported format) in a folder you turn streaming on for. Whether that user has any access to the folder itself or not is immaterial.

  • Well that's not how I view the above statements. Maybe someone else can shine a light upon this situation. So from this last statement I'm assuming that if streaming isn't on for any user unless it's turned on in the streaming settings. Back to my original question: How would one grant permissions to stream to a single user. It's possible in other situations is that just something not supported by WHS I'm wondering.
