Windows validation failure.

Question
-
Hello,
I am having trouble validating my Windows XP (Home), which I need to do in order to download some files from the Microsoft website.
I can confirm that it is genuine, bought boxed and sealed from a retailer. In fact I have previously successfully validated it so I not sure why I have to do it again? It has not been used on any other PC or laptop.
I have tried the various suggestions to no avail so please find below the listing obtained by running the diagnostic:
Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Results
Passed Active scripting allowed Passed Display images enabled Passed Computer time and date correct Passed ActiveX enabled Passed Windows validation ActiveX loaded Passed Office validation ActiveX loaded Passed Validation Self-help ActiveX loaded Passed Validation Self-help: Data.dat Corruption check Passed Validation Self-help: Cryptography check Passed Validation Self-help: Product Activation check When I try to validate I get this message:
Unknown error encountered during Windows validation. The validation service is unable to determine whether your copy of Windows is genuine. Please validate again. If additional attempts result in validation errors you may want to try again later.
[0x80080101]When I try again I get this message:Why didn't my machine complete validation?
You have encountered an unknown error. Please contact your local product support team for further assistance with this issue.

I have the same issue also. After working with MS support on the issue it is still not fixed. They just stopped responding after the first few fixes they suggest didn't work. Please post if you can find a fix!!!

Oscar,
This is an issue with your XML services on the computer. If you compare your Diagnostic Report to others on the forum, you will notice that yours is missing a bunch of text below the "Office Details" line. We commonly refer to this area as the XML blob. This is caused by a missing Registry Key.
I will provide you the steps to resolve this XML issue.Fix (Part 1):
1) Click “Start” button, then “Run”
2) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll <Click OK>
(Note: This will register the msxml3.dll and the registry entry ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSXML.DOMDocument’ will be generated)
If this does not work, the msxml3.dll may be missing or corrupt. Follow the below Fix (Part 2), in that case:Fix (Part 2):
1) Go to the Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7) download page at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28494391-052b-42ff-9674-f752bdca9582&DisplayLang=en
2) From the files available, download “msxml3.msi”
3) Double click the file and follow the steps to install.
4) Click “Start” button, then “Run...”
5) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll <Click OK>
Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk prior making any changes in the registry. You should be okay because the files are being registried and no changes but still a good idea to ensure any critical data is saved. Please let us know if the above steps resolved your issues. Have a great weekend.

Without seeing your diagnostic results it will be difficult to provide an answer. If you are receiving the 299 error as the other user in this thread then try the following:

Stephen,
Thank you for your reply. This is something I have already tried as I spotted it on another thread. However, I tried it again and I'm afraid still no luck. The message I get both before and after installing msxml3.dll is:
"DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll failed.
Return code was: 0x80004005"
Do you have any other suggestions?
Many thanks,
Oscar

The line that describes the default browser installed on your computer has something that I have never seen before, it reads: Default Browser: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Google.exe
My suggestion would be to temporarily uninstall any Google-related programs and Internet Explorer add-ons, restart, and then try again.

Qayyum,
What happens when the validation failures occur? Do you receive any errors? Also please try and validate again. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows" located in the upper right hand corner. If this does not solve the problem please run the diagnostic test and post your results back in the thread. Please follow the guidance below:
Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.
Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

Dan,
Thanks for your suggestion. I have tried what you said and uninstalled Google Earth and the Google Toolbar programs. I then disabled all add-ons and rebooted. After deleting all temporary internet files I tried to vaildate windows again, but still no luck.
I ran MGADiag again and noted that the default browser is still C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\Google.exe. Is it possible for me to change the default browser manually and if so how do I do this?
Many thanks,
Oscar

Oscargrouch,
To change the default browser, start Internet Explorer 7 and from the Tools menu choose Internet Options, then the Programs tab. The first selection on the Programs tab allows you to set IE as the default browser. Restart and try again.
Monday, September 17, 2007 6:15 PM -
Dan,
Thanks for your reply.
I have looked at the Programs tab, but unfortunately I do not have IE 7 and this option is not available on the version I have (ver. 6.0 sp2). I have the Microsoft CD for IE 7 but it will not install. I seem to go around in circles as each solution requires another step that fails!
Your continued help will be much appreciated!
Oscar
p.s. microsft update also fails!

OK, I think I can fix your problem but probably not forever. This same problem has been driving me absolutely crazy. To make it work I had to do this. Search for all instances of msmxl3.dll and msmxl3r.dll on your disk and delete them all. You will probably find some in either or both system32/registeredpackages and system32/softwaredistribution. Delete the entries in which the dll's were found. You may have to restart your computer and them immediately delete the two dll's in system32 in order to be allowed to do that. Then go to the microsoft page to download and open msxml3.msi sp7. Now I know this is going to sound wierd, but run the install and them immediately run the install again. Go to Windows update and all should work. However, there will be times when you update the computer and you will have to go back and repeat all the above steps to get it working again.

Hello,
Many thanks for your suggestion. I tried to search for the files, including searching in sub files and hidden folders etc but could not find either of dll files you mentioned on my computer. I downloaded the msxml3.msi sp7 file and ran it twice as you suggested and it appeared to install okay, but still no luck. I tried all of this again after rebooting but the same thing applies. Even after insatalling the msmxl3.msi sp7 I could still not find the dll files on my computer.
Out of interest, when I run "regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll" from "Start", "Run" I get the following error message: "DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\system32\msmxl3.dll failed. Return Code was: 0x80004005"
Any other help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
I am going away for a couple of weeks so if you don't get a prompt reply to help that is why!
Thanks again,
