Backup not working, neither is Chkdsk

Question
-
Backups have been going along fine for a year until now. Backups on my laptop will not complete. Remembering from previous posts, run chkdsk /f /r if backups are not behaving.
I do this and low and behold, chkdsk fails on stage 2 saying it can't delete an orphaned file. I've searched the net, but cannot come up with a solution to the problem.
All I can say is Help
Thanks

OK,
Rather than mess around with log files and verbose listings, I took a picture of the screen (ah technology at work)
CHKDSK came back with this error:
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
And then the machine continues to boot to windows.
360896 file records processed.
File verification complete
Deleting orphan file record segment 141083
readable file record segment 141083 is not writable
Windows has finished checking the disk.
I'm running Vista Ultimate.
thanks
It sounds to me like you should get a new hard drive, then restore from your last good backup.- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Sunday, February 22, 2009 5:49 AM

Can you supply the actual error message you see when you attempt to run chkdsk?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Sunday, February 22, 2009 3:34 AMModerator -
Ken,
I'll try, but when chkdsk quits, the message is on the screen only for about 5 seconds. Do you know of any switches on chkdsk that would allow for logging the status of its output?
Thanks

Here's another twist the the saga. From my other partition on the disk I restored the machine to factory defaults. When I ran Chkdsk on this new install, all went well. I also use SpinRite on the disk and all sectors were able to be written to. I have gone back several weeks on the backups on WHS, and I still get the problem. So I'm thinking that even if I get a new drive for may machine, I will still have the problem.
