Necessary services won't don't automatically start & block connection to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • After connecting a new machine to my WHS, when I reboot I get an error about the Alert Viewer not being available... the exact message is "Alert notices are not available in the Alert Viewer due to an error, or incomplete action, or a service has stopped working. If the problem persists, contact the person who administers your server." When I try to login using the Launchpad it tells me the server is offline (not true). I've tried disabling the firewall on my laptop and rebooting, but the issue still persists.

When I look in the Services applet on my laptop (Win7), I see a lot of WHS services that should be started but aren't including:

    • Windows Server Client Computer Backup Provider Service
    • Windows Server Download Service
    • Windows Server Health Service
    • Windows Server Initialization Service
    • Windows Server Notifications Provider Service
    • Windows Server Service Provider Registry

But I do see a few that are running ok such as:

    • Windows Server Connector Update
    • Windows Server LAN Configuration
    • Windows Server Media Center Client Service

Nothing in the event logs jump out as saying the root cause. I can manually start each of these above mentioned services and then I can login to the LaunchPad... but why wouldn't they start automatically as they are all configured to do?
