Migrate the OS to a new server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an HP EX485.  I have come to realize that there are some hardware limitations, namely the number of disks that I can stuff in the case (of course) as well as the number of drives that I can add externally.  Not to mention that support is gone now.  So I'm wondering, can I migrate the OS to a new server?  I imagine that I can't simply stick the Restore disk into another server and hit 'go', but I'm wondering if I can take that software key and get the OS media and install it with that key?

    Keeping my fingers crossed... ;)

  • Your Windows Home Server install is tied to your HP MediaSmart Server hardware. While Microsoft is understanding about moving from one home-built computer to another, when the OS is bundled with the hardware they are much less flexible.

You will need to buy a new copy of Windows Home Server, with a new product key.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
